We had a one night passage from Block Island to Sandy Hook NJ. Safely at our Sandy Hook anchorage we waited out hurricane Fiona weather to pass us. From Sandy Hook we sailed by Cape May where were scheduled to visit with my family again, this time my cousin caught COVID and we had to cancel our plans for the second time. We continued sailing through the Delaware Bay and into the Chesapeake.
We were invited to dinner at our friend’s home on Kent Island. Kent Island is the location of the first European settlement in Maryland and it is the largest island in the Chesapeake. Our challenge was navigating a small shallow river that they live on. On our way in it was mid tide rising, it was a challenge we got into some very shallow water, had to avoid local crab traps to boot.
We had a wonderful visit with our friends. Just before we arrived they pulled their crab pots out in preparation for dinner. We enjoyed a 5 star feast of charcuterie board, caprese salad, cream of crab soup, a steamy pot of seasoned Maryland blue crabs, sourdough bread, salad, mash potatoes, and grilled steak.
We had so much fun the evening before we had to hurry up and hustle in the morning to leave before all the tide was gone. While leaving the dock we were pulling out in the mud, our depth gauge read zero feet under our boat but we made it out, we did not get stuck, god bless Illimite’!!
